BIOLOGY RESOURCES
ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB

If you have a navigation frame to the left (a list of academic disciplines) and you'd like to get rid of it, you can do so by clicking HERE. Clicking on the hyperlinks on this page will open a new window, eliminating the navigation frame to the left. We do not wish to confine other people's Web pages to our framed structure. You can return to this page by using the BACK button on your browser, by saving it as a Bookmark or Favorite, or by using the pulldown menu on the address line (if your browser is so equipped).
This list was reviewed and updated on 6 August 2001. Please send news of dead or changed links and suggestions of new resources to the College Webmaster

The Biology Project, from the University of Arizona. Contains extensive sections on biochemistry, cell biology, developmental biology, human biology, Mendelian genetics, immunology, and molecular biology. There is a hyperlink to the same material in Spanish.

PubMed Central While current offerings at the site are modest, PubMed Central promises to become a major resource for scholars and professionals in the life sciences.

A Hypermedia Glossary of Genetic Terms, created and maintained by Dr. Birgid Schlindwein of the Weihenstephan Information and Documentation Centre, this hyperlinked resource defines nearly 600 genetic terms.

DNA From the Beginning the world's first online, animated genetics primer—that takes a person from basic concepts of inheritance through up-to-the minute methods of DNA analysis.

Biology Links on the World Wide Web, maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey.

BioChemNet, excellent resources for both biology and chemistry.

Kimball's Biology Pages, an adaptation of the sixth edition of Professor Emeritus John W. Kimball's Biology, a hypertext dictionary specializing in cell and molecular biology.

Introductory Biology Laboratories Instructional Website Ohio University's Biology Department hosts this nice resource for lab instructors (and students) of introductory biology. Currently, the site features labs for three courses: Cellular and Molecular Biology, Animal Organ Systems, and Survey of the Animal Kingdom.

NanoWorld, The Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis is an interdisciplinary research and service facility dedicated to an understanding of the structure and composition of all materials at atomic, molecular, cellular and macromolecular scales.

The Microbiology Network, a communication resource for microbiology and biotechnology professionals.

Human Anatomy On-line, interactive environment through the use of Java applets, over one hundred images, and animations.

Gray's Anatomy (1918) The classic is given a new feel, with its 1,247 illustrations ("many in color and unchanged since the first edition of 1859") rendered in multiple resolutions, and its 13,000 entries presented in an encyclopedic subject index with hyperlinks to their respective pages and illustrations in the text.

The Virtual Embryo This site, created by Dr. Leon W. Browder at the University of Calgary, Canada, is highlighted by Dynamic Development: A Modular Resource to Facilitate Learning in Developmental Biology. From gametogenesis to genetic regulation of development, each subject heading is fully explained, followed by associated graphics and suggested readings.

Histology on the Web, a treasury of images, put together by two med students at the University of Kansas.

Bugs in the News Much of this is written for laymen, but there is a great deal of good information here.

Access Excellence A Place in Cyberspace for Biology Teaching & Learning, sponsored by Genentech, Inc. -- weekly news reports, science activities, etc.

BioBook, created by Dr. Michael J. Farabee of Estrella Mountain Community College in Arizona. Topics include chemistry, cellular biology, genetics, thermodynamics, protein synthesis, plants and structure, animal organ systems (integumentary, respiratory, etc.), evolutionary theory, and biological diversity, among others.

BIOSIS: Biosystematics and Life Science Resources Current taxonomy and nomenclature.

The Interactive Fly DNA of the fruit fly.

Biology Hypertextbook Chapters, from M.I.T.

MendelWeb, an educational resource for teachers and students interested in the origins of classical genetics.

The GeneLetter, newsletter on Genetic issues and science -- full-text articles, running to the brief and casual.

Tree of Life, from University of Arizona--phylogeny and biodiversity (a graphically rich page).

Internet Biodiversity Service , from East London University.

eNature.com , online searchable field guides to over 4,800 plant and animal species.

Scott's Botanical Links, check out the "site of the day." Maintained by Professor Scott Russell of the University of Oklahoma Department of Botany and Microbiology.

Plant Pathology Home-Page, from Hanover University in Germany. Pages on weeds, parasitic plants, bacteriology, mycology, nematology, virology.

Smithsonian Catalog of Botanical Illustrations, maintained by the National Museum of Natural History.

Resources in Microbiology and Immunology, from England's University of Leicester.

Integrated Human Gene Map, with accompanying explanatory article from Science Online.

Primer on Molecular Genetics, by Denise Casey of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Marine Species Index The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) of Woods Hole, Massachusetts maintains this database of "approximately 210 invertebrates and fish" that are collected or maintained by the MBL.

The Cephalopod Page For people into squids and octopi and the like. From Dalhousie University.

CMS Molecular Biology Resource, from University of Nebraska, "a compendium of electronic and Internet-accessible tools and resources for molecular biology, biotechnology, molecular evolution, biochemistry, and biomolecular modeling."

Immunoassay Animations, from Glasgow University. This site requires Future Splash plug-in for your browser, but it makes it very easy to download that, too.

The Electronic Zoo, hyperlinks to resources on animals--from arthropods to anthropoids--from Washington University, St. Louis.

Entomology Resources on the Internet, insect-related hyperlinks, from Iowa State University.

Biotechnology Information Center, one of ten information centers at the National Agricultural Library of the US Department of Agriculture.
