Placement Testing Center

Welcome to the Placement Testing Center Webpage at Capital Community College! Our staff is dedicated to providing comprehensive proctoring services to incoming and current students in a comfortable and positive environment. These services consist of the following: ACCUPLACER® General Placement test, ACCUPLACER® English as-A-Second Language (ESL) test and the TEAS V. Students must ensure they have been accepted to the College and have received a Banner Student ID number prior to taking the ACCUPLACER® General Placement and ESL tests.

ACCUPLACER® GENERAL PLACEMENT TEST

Capital uses the ACCUPLACER® computerized test to provide you with useful information about your academic skills in Math, Writing, and Reading. The results of this test, in conjunction with your academic background, goals, and interests, are used by academic advisors and counselors to determine your Math and English course selection. You cannot "pass" or "fail" the placement test, but it is very important that you prepare and do your very best so we can have an accurate measure of your academic skills.

Who should take this test?

  • Students who are attending college for the first time
  • Returning or transfer students who have not taken college level MATH and/ or ENGLISH courses
  • Students enrolling into courses which require MATH and/ or ENGLISH as prerequisite courses.

  • Notice: If English is not your first language, and you have not received 3 or more years of English instruction from a high school in the U.S, you are required to take the English-As-A Second Language (ESL) test. Please refer to the ESL page for more information.

How Do I Prepare For The Test?

Taking the test:

  • Click Here To Make An Appointment!
  • There is no cost for taking the test.
  • The test is untimed, but on average students take 1-3 hours to complete the test.
  • Please review Test Center Policies before your scheduled appointment.
  • Scratch paper will be provided.
  • Results are available upon completion.

Test Day:

  • Please come to Room 220, 20-minutes prior to your scheduled appointment.
  • You are required to bring a government-issued, non-expired photo ID (e.g. driver's license, State ID, permanent resident card or passport).
  • High school students are allowed to test with their highschool ID.
  • Bring your Banner Student ID # and a writing utensil.
  • Parking is available in the Morgan Street Garage. Parking tickets will be validated at the welcome desk located in the college's lobby (1st floor).

Students with Disabilities

If you have a documented disability and require academic adjustments, please contact
Helena Carrasquillo (Interim Disabilities Coordinator) at (860) 906-5204 or hcarrasquillo@capitalcc.edu. To obtain adjustments, you must schedule an appointment with Helena and provide documentation which describes your disability and supports your need to receive adjustments. ACCUPLACER®

TEAS V

The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) measures basic essential skills in the academic content areas of reading, mathematics, science and English and language usage. The objectives assessed on the TEAS V are those which nurse educators deemed most appropriate and relevant to measure entry-level academic readiness of the nursing program applicants.

Taking the TEAS V:

  • Time limit is 209 minutes
  • 170 four-option, multiple choice questions:
    • READING: 48 questions, 58 minutes
      paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions.
    • MATH: 34 questions, 51 minutes
      whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions, decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and ratio/proportion.
    • SCIENCE: 54 questions, 66 minutes
      science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, basic physical principles, and general science.
    • ENGLISH and LANGUAGE USAGE: 34 questions, 34 minutes
      punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling.

Preparing for the TEAS V

The ATI website has many resources available for purchase, including: Learning Strategies, TEAS Pre-test Study Manual and TEAS Online Practice assessments.

Registering for the TEAS V

  1. Create an account on www.atitesting.com and login to see a listing of Capital Community College test dates. Please ensure you choose Capital CC Connecticut as your institution of choice in your PROFILE.
  2. Click on "Online Store" then TEAS®: Follow prompts, choose test date and add to cart for purchase. The cost of the test is $35.00 (excluding taxes).

Effective July 1, 2015, students taking the TEAS V at Capital Community College are required to pay a non-refundable proctor fee before testing. Fees are as follows:

  • Connecticut Community College Students (students with a Banner Student ID number) : $15.00
  • Non-Connecticut Community College Students - $35.00

Proctor Fee Payment Process:

  • Payments must be made to the Business Office on the 2nd floor during their regular business hours OR to the Placement Testing Center on the day of the test.
  • Checks must be made payable to Capital Community College.

During Business Hours:

  • CT Community College Students will directly make their payment to the Business Office.
  • Non CT Community College students must go to Enrollment Services to receive an ID number then make their payment to the Business Office.

OR

Day of the test: Payments must be made in the form of a check or credit card. Cash will NOT be accepted! Students who would like to receive their test results on the same day are required to pay the proctor fee before their test date OR by check on the day of the test. Students will be charged a $25.00 fee for any returned checks.

Test Day

Note: There is no waiting period to retake the test.

TEST CENTER POLICIES:

  1. Students are required to present a valid government issued photo ID (driver's license, Passport, State ID, permanent resident card) to take the test.
  2. The following items are prohibited in the test room (but are not limited to): calculators, dictionaries, electronic or photographic devices, food, beverages, books, translators, notes and study materials.
  3. You are only allowed to have your ID, scratch paper and pencil on the computer workstation.
  4. All personal belongings must be placed under the computer workstation or at the front of the room during testing.
  5. Children are NOT allowed in the test room. Proctors are not responsible for the supervision of children.
  6. Talking and disruptive behavior are not permitted in the test room. Students may only communicate with the Center's staff (proctors) during testing.
  7. Proctors are not allowed to assist students in answering any questions on the test.
  8. There are no scheduled breaks during testing.
  9. Students are prohibited from accessing any personal items such as cell phone, backpack, purse or study materials during testing.
  10. Scratch paper and pencils must be returned to the proctor before leaving the test room.
  11. Surfing of the internet and use of other computer programs while testing are prohibited!
  12. Proctors are authorized to dismiss any student from the test session due to misconduct, cheating or violation of Test Center's policies.

Important Notice for Students taking the TEAS V:

Students who arrive late will not be admitted into the exam therefore they would have forfeited their test registration payment. Capital is unable to reschedule any test due to a student being late, cancelling or missing their test date. Please contact ATI Customer Service at 1-800-667-7531 if you have further questions and concerns.

Inclement Weather:

In the event of inclement weather, students must check the College's homepage for any closings or cancellations. If a test is cancelled, information on a new test date will be communicated to students at a reasonable time. Students who are taking the TEAS V must contact ATI Customer Service at 1-800-667-7531 to reschedule their test.
