Students are expected to use Open Lab times to complete
assignments in the Photo Darkroom. Supervised Photo Lab times
will be posted at the beginning of the semester. |
Catalog Course
Description:
Introduction to the fundamental operations of light, camera, and film
utilizing back and white materials and available light situations.
Photographic techniques are explored through lecture, demonstration, and
class assignments. Students photograph, process, and print their own work.
Emphasis is placed on acquiring creative and technical skills necessary
for proper camera an darkroom operation. Students must bring their
own 35mm camera with manual exposure controls (see below).
Supplies You Will
Need to Buy:
The Student Photography Lab (room
1001) houses all of the darkroom equipment and chemistry necessary for
developing and printing standard black-and-white films and papers. However,
to complete assignments for this course, you will need to provide the
following equipment and supplies:
|
35mm
manually operated single-lens reflex (SLR) camera with 50mm
lens.
This is a camera that has total manual operation of the shutter
and lens settings, manual focus, and a removable lens. It may have
automatic operation through its internal light meter, but it must
have a manual override. If you have any questions about your camera,
contact your instructor or the Academic Media Technology office as soon as possible. |

Black-and-White
Film
You will need at least six 24-exposure rolls of 400 ASA traditional
black-and-white film. We recommend:
CAUTION:
Some films are labeled "Black-and-White" but are made to be
processed in color photo labs. Look at the box carefully. If you see indications
such as "CN," "C-41 process," or "take to your
local photo processor," do NOT buy this type of
film. These cannot be processed in the college photo lab. Examples of
film NOT to buy include Kodak T400CN, Kodak "Black & White +"
and Ilford XP-1, XP-2, and XP-2 Plus.
