One Play is an exciting partnership between the Hartford Stage Co. and Capital Community College. Each semester, the entire college focuses on one play staged by this world-class theatre, offering students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to enjoy performances at a discounted price and to engage in discussion.
Faculty are encouraged to attend a Critical Eye workshop at the Hartford Stage to discover ways to incorporate each play into their syllabus. The college also hosts a pre-play lecture or panel discussion with the director or other members of the production team. The Meet the Actors session held on campus the week after the One Play performances is a popular event, as is the pre-play reception with free food and live music, usually performed by Capital's Jazz Ensemble.
Each semester, between 400 and 500 students and 30-50 Capital employees cross the street to attend the performance. That is approximately 10% of the college's student population! Many students have shared in surveys that this was their first experience with live theatre.
One Play was spawned by a Hartford Heritage faculty workshop held at the Hartford Stage in the spring of 2011.
Tickets for the designated One Play performance dates are $5 for students and $15 for employees. Two tickets can be purchased at the discounted price.
