PURPOSE
The Writing Center offers assistance to students encountering difficulties with writing assignments. These difficulties may involve generating and organizing ideas, developing paragraphs, and avoiding mechanical or grammatical mistakes. The goal of the Writing Center is to produce independent writers who are competent with college-level composition.POLICY
Writing tutors assist students in understanding the general expectations of college writing. This is not limited to composition courses, but may include assignments for literature, history, nursing, or any other course that requires a written project. For clarification of a specific assignment, students should speak with the instructor.Writing tutors expose students to various pre-writing strategies such as brainstorming, free-writing, and outlining.
Writing tutors encourage students to become independent writers by providing them with a basic understanding of the model essay, introduction, supporting information, conclusion, rhetorical modes, thesis statement, topic sentences, and transitions.
Writing tutors will not proofread assignments. Since the goal of the Writing Lab is to provide students with the skills to become independent writers, tutors will not edit assignments for students. Proofreading and editing by tutors only furthers dependency and inadequate skills and is considered unfair to both the student and his/her classmates.
Writing tutors may review previously graded writing assignments in order to help a student understand and avoid repeated mistakes.
Writing tutors may assign and review diagnostic compositions to assist students in develop writing skills.
For students having specific grammatical problems, tutors may provide grammar exercises and reviews.
