Instructions This Review and Practice exercise is an opportunity for you to test your understanding of what you have studied in Chapter 13: Pronouns. There are two parts to this exercise: this first part can be scored by the computer; the second part will require you to rewrite a paragraph and, when you click on the "Answers" button, you will receive an answer sheet so you can score what you have done yourself. A pronoun is a substitute for a noun or for a group of words. In the spaces provided after the sentences below, replace the repetitive words (in bold) with an appropriate pronoun. 1. The cable TV station started broadcasting today, and the cable TV station devoted a whole hour to local events. 2. One report was about a woman and the woman's struggle to keep the home she lived in. 3. The state is trying to force owners of property near the woods to sell the owners' land to make room for the new highway. 4. The woman in the report is a Native American who claims the land is the woman's by an ancient treaty. 5. Taking the issue to court will be expensive, but taking the issue to court may be inevitable. A pronoun refers to its antecedent. Some pronouns do not need antecedents. In the sentences below, identify the antecedent of each pronoun in italics. If the pronoun doesn't need an antecedent write "none" in the blank. 6. People returning to school after many years often find that they learn faster than they used to. 7. However, at my age college has its disadvantages. 8. Molly was amazed at how old her classmates made her feel. 9. The other students seemed so sure of their strengths. 10. Nobody realized that Molly was depending on me so heavily. The subject form of personal pronouns are for subjects. The object forms are for pronouns performing all other sentence functions, except (in formal situations) completers for forms of to be. Choose the correct form of the pronouns provided and then write those pronouns in the space, separating them (if more than one is called for) with a comma and space. 11. While Hong and ________ (I/me) were laughing, Nadia led ________ (we/us) into the hallway. 12. There ________ (she/her) and the bakers told us to close our eyes. 13. In a few minutes, we heard Nadia and ________ (they/them) clanking pans in the kitchen, and then they called ________ (we/us) in. 14. What ________ (we/us) saw will give ________ (we/us) something to talk about for years. 15. One baker and Nadia were standing in the middle of the table where ________ (he/him) and ________ (she/her) were building a human-sized cake castle around themselves. A personal pronoun must agree with its antecedent. This can be difficult when the gender of the antecedent is unclear. In the sentences below, the pronouns don't agree with their antecedents. In each space, correct the pronoun, assuming that the antecedent is: feminine in #16, masculine in #17, one of each in #18. 16. Each dog trainer should sign up for the show at their nearest YMCA. 17. Everybody thought that they would read about this year's show in the paper. 18. But neither of the reporters was able to get their editor to publish the event. In the sentences below, the pronouns don't agree with their antecedents. In the space, correct the antecedent to agree with the pronoun. 19. A winner from last year's show can usually expect that they will be invited early. 20. However, everybody in the Hartford Dog Club seemed to want Margie to come to their show this year.
