Reminders for Informational Interviews
- You are not asking the person for a job. You are gathering
information on which to base some decisions. Make sure your contacts
understand this.
- Always make an appointment, except with close personal friends.
- Be prepared to take the lead in the conversation - remember,
you are interviewing him/her. Prepare in advance by learning
everything you can about the person, the organization, and the
field. Have some questions in mind to show that you have done
your homework. Know what you want to ask.
- Respect the person's time - don't be subservient or apologetic,
but do plan a manageable agenda. Do not wear out your welcome.
- Recognize that everyone has his/her own attitudes, biases
and feelings which must be evaluated.
- Keep your eyes open for other clues about the organizational
environment.
- Be sure to send a thank you following the informational interview.
- It is good idea to keep your contacts informed of job interviews
and job offers especially if you believe they have taken an interest
in your career. Maintaining such contacts is an ongoing process
which will help you throughout your career.
